Despite the freeze on legislation, the demonstrations against the government’s judicial reform plan have yet to halt. On Thursday morning, a group of anti-legislation protesters calling themselves “Blocking the Coup” chained themselves to the gate at the entrance to the Knesset, blocking it to vehicle traffic.
Police officers and Knesset security personnel attended to the incident and removed the protesters. Five demonstrators were taken in for questioning after they refused to comply and confronted police officers.
The demonstrators published a statement stating: “Instead of solving the housing crisis, fighting the cost of living, and fixing the education system, the coalition members are promoting a coup d’etat, creating dangerous militias, shooting down legislation that would protect women and are purposefully leading us all to a civil war for their interests.
Instead of fake dialogue at the President’s Residence about how many judges the coalition will appoint, we call on the MKs to recognize their lack of ability to solve the crisis and tell them to gather a civil assembly to form a constitution. The assembly, comprising a representative sample of the population, will reach widespread agreements that will set the balance of power between the three branches. This is the only way to ensure true democracy that will serve us all.”
