Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina officially filed on Friday to run for president in 2024, according to the Federal Election Commission”s website.
The filing comes ahead of a formal announcement that is expected to take place Monday in South Carolina, reported CNN.
Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, launched a presidential exploratory committee in April. Earlier this month, he teased an announcement for May 22.
The senator joins a growing GOP primary field that already includes former President Donald Trump, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and talk radio host Larry Elder.
Others are expected to join as well, most notably Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who, according to reports on Thursday, is expected to formally announce in a “virtual” way on May 24 that he is running for President.

Republicans who are also weighing potential campaigns include former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also mentioned as a possible contender, but he officially announced recently that he has decided not to run.
