A highly charged conversation recently took place between the commander of the brigade in charge of Northern Samaria, Lt. Col. Arik Moyal, and the family and neighbors of Meir Tamari who was murdered two weeks ago in a shooting attack, according to Kan.
Tal Tamari, Meir’s widow, told Moyal, while her children were playing in the room: “Look at them. Their father is not coming back. Look at me. What are you doing so that it doesn’t happen to anyone here?” He answered her, “The attack that happened here is my failure. I was not up to the task.”
One of the residents of the area who was present at the conversation addressed Moyal with serious accusations. “Northern Samaria is becoming Gaza. When they got out of hand in Gaza an operation was launched, here, nothing happens.”
Another resident demanded that the area be cleared of weapons, saying that they hear bursts of gunfire every evening. Many of the residents demanded that the post at the intersection where Tamari was murdered be manned.
Benjamin Horgen, a relative of the Tamari family, added: “There is a feeling that our way of life has been deeply damaged. We should not be afraid to disrupt the lives of the Palestinians, who will understand that there is a price for an attack, not only for the terrorist or his squad, but for the entire nation that supports him. They’ll say it’s ‘collective punishment’, so let them say it.”
One of the residents of the area asked Moyal: “How are you guarding us tomorrow morning?”, and he replied, “I’m not guarding you tomorrow morning, I’m guarding you now.”
Moyal commented: “It’s always easier when the responsibility is not on you. The amount of stone-throwing has decreased. The feeling of security overall is fine. In 2022, 55 terrorists were killed compared to 8 the previous year.”
Michael Haddad from the Forum for the Security of Northern Samaria said: “We heard the commander admit with courage and honesty that he did not live up to his mission! The people of Israel experienced severe losses in the heart of the country, in Tel Aviv, Bnei Brak, Elad, Hadera and more from murderous terrorism that emanated from northern Samaria. Two weeks ago we lost our friend Meir Tamari in a shooting attack close to a checkpointthat was not manned. We demand the only solution that will give security to the State of Israel and the entire area of northern Samaria – an extensive military operation to remove terrorism from northern Samaria! We will not stop until we are sure that no more Jewish blood will be spilled.”
