Liliana Segre reelected as president of Italian Senate anti-hate commission

Italian Holocaust educator Liliana Segre was reelected on Tuesday as the president of the Italian Senate commission against hate racism, antisemitism and incitement to violence, Domani reported.
Senator for Life and Holocaust survivor Segre proposed that the committee be reconstituted, which was approved in January 2023 by the Senate.
The 20-member panel is tasked with observing, studying and intervening to combat antisemitism, racism, intolerance, and incitement to hatred and violence against minority groups and those with physical or mental conditions.
The commission supervises “crucial issues, such as freedom of expression and the protection of the dignity of the person,” Segre said during Senate testimony. She described the two aspects of human rights as complimentary.
During the previous parliamentary period, the commission studied how large tech companies, such as Amazon, Twitter and Meta, are acting to curtail and remove online hate speech and the issues they are encountering with content moderation.

Segre told Senate TV after her reelection that “there is a lot of work to do.” She mentioned that there is a growing need to begin with kindergartens in which she said there is already the beginning of inclement to hatred.
“But I’m sure the people elected with me and all the hearings that will come will be of great help,” she said.
The commission was approved by the Senate in a unanimous vote.
Commission member Senator Raffaella Paita described Segre as the “most natural solution” to again lead the panel due to the “dedication and spirit with which the work was carried out” by the group during the last session.
