The negotiations at the President’s Residence on the judicial reform will resume this week following the ‘Million March’ held in Jerusalem in support of the reforms last Thursday.
Kan Reshet Bet reported that the Likud party is blaming the opposition Yesh Atid party for the lack of progress in the negotiations, with one official claiming that the Yesh Atid representatives “are doing everything to prevent agreements in the talks.”
According to senior Likud officials, as long as Yesh Atid takes part in the talks at the President’s Residence, it will be impossible to reach a compromise on the judicial reform issue. The officials stated that a compromise is only possible if the negotiations are held with the National Unity party without the participation of Yesh Atid.
Among the examples they cited is the demand of the Yesh Atid representatives to include the Draft Law and the issue of haredi recruitment in the IDF in the judicial reform talks, as well as the large gaps which exist between the Yesh Atid and National Unity parties.
In response, the Yesh Atid party stated that its positions are closely coordinated with the National Unity party and the two parties see eye to eye on the judicial reform issue.
“The Likud is trying to create a conflict between the opposition parties, but spreading lies will not lead the talks in the President’s Residence anywhere. There is complete agreement between us and the National Unity party on the main issue in dispute – not to allow the coalition to choose two judges on its behalf through the Judicial Selection Committee.”
