The supreme court of Iran on Sunday upheld the death sentence handed down to a dissident accused of leading an Arab separatist group Tehran claimed was behind terror attacks on the Iranian military that killed 25 people in 2018.
Habib Farajollah Chaab, a dual Swedish-Iranian citizen, was captured by Iranian forces in Turkey in 2020 and brought to Tehran for trial, Iran has claimed, without disclosing how he was taken into custody.
“Chaab was sentenced to death after several court sessions with the presence of his lawyer,” Mizan reported. “The Supreme Court confirmed his death sentence.”
The Swedish-based dissident was placed on trial last year, accused of leading the Arab Struggle Movement for Liberation of Ahwaz, a group which has called for an independent Arab republic in the oil-rich Khuzestan province in southwest Iran.
The organization, Iran has claimed, is responsible for multiple terrorist bombing attacks on the Iranian military, including a deadly attack on a military parade.
