The ability to own firearms for self defense, sports shooting or hunting should be a right in SA. Are we not supposed to be a free country? Besides, lets face it, 95+% of crimes are committed with illegal firearms. The ministers claim that many legal guns end up in criminal hands is simply not true. It’s public knowledge that the SAPS cannot account for more than 4000 of their firearms and more than 9 000 000 rounds of ammunition. That’s excluding the thousands of surrendered firearms that their Colonel Prinsloo was sentenced to 18-years for selling to gangs in the Western Cape.
Legal firearm owners are not the problem and the current legislation is enough to deal with illegal guns and the crime committed with them. What we need is a more effective police force and court system.
