The IDF’s operation in Jenin has ended and military forces have withdrawn from the city, the IDF announced Monday evening.
“Following the security forces activity in Jenin, all the forces and military vehicles have exited the city,” the IDF spokesperson stated.
“Throughout the duration of the activity, the forces engaged and operated decisively to thwart the threats in the area. Furthermore, IDF helicopters were dispatched to rescue the injured soldiers and officers from the area. IDF combat helicopters were also dispatched to the scene and fired to assist the forces on the ground. Throughout the duration of the activity, gunmen fired toward the IDF helicopters with light weapons. A number of hits were identified. During the activity, seven soldiers and police officers were moderately and lightly injured. Another IDF soldier who was lightly injured has been evacuated to a hospital to receive medical treatment after being injured by shrapnel. His family has been notified,” the military spokesperson said.
Seven soldiers were injured in gun battles with terrorists in Jenin. The IDF and Border Police deployed extensive forces to extract a force in Jenin after Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists ambushed IDF armored vehicles during an arrest operation.
Multiple bombs were hurled at the vehicles during the ambush, leaving at least one damaged, and injuring five Border Police officers.
A massive gun battle broke out during the arrest operation, which involved a number of undercover Border Police officers. Two IDF soldiers were also injured during the fighting.
IDF attack helicopters were deployed to Jenin during the battle, the first time such vehicles have been used in combat in Judea and Samaria since the days of the Second Intifada more than 20 years ago.
Palestinian Authority news site WAFA reported that four Palestinian Arabs were killed in the firefight, with 45 more wounded. Two wanted terrorists, Assem Abu al-Haija, and Mussab Hassan al-Barmaki, were arrested during the operation.
