MK Avigdor Liberman, who heads the Yisrael Beytenu party, has called on opposition leader MK Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) and MK Benny Gantz (National Unity) not to allow Shas chief Aryeh Deri back into the government.
“Lapid and Gantz, you were not elected to bring Deri back into the government,” Liberman tweeted. “I turn to all of the citizens of Israel, to all who wish to preserve Israeli democracy and the State of Israel as a Jewish, Zionist, and liberal state, to those good people who have taken part for so many long weeks in the protest – we are facing two days of critical decisions for the country’s future.”
“Join me in the call to Lapid and Gantz not to lend a hand to the expected agreements in the President’s Residence, which will allow Aryeh Deri’s return to the government, something which may stabilize Netanyahu’s messianic-haredi coalition for another long period.”
Meanwhile, MK Ze’ev Elkin, from Gantz’s National Unity party, told Galei Zahal that Deri is not one of the issues under discussion at the moment.
“There is no discussion about it in the President’s Residence,” he said. “There is a discussion on the principle of reasonability, as part of the President’s draft, but those who are familiar with the Supreme Court’s ruling know that reasonability alone will not bring Deri back.”
