Former Democratic New York State Senator Anna Kaplan filed on Monday to run in 2024 for New York”s 3rd Congressional District, which is currently represented by Republican Rep. George Santos, whose reelection bid faces seeming insurmountable odds after multiple scandals related to his personal life, background and financial dealings.
Kaplan, who is Jewish, lives in Great Neck, and until she was defeated last year represented as a state senator a large portion of Santos”s district.
She has been outspoken in her criticism of the disgraced Santos who since his election victory in the 2022 midterms to the district on Long Island”s North Shore has faced numerous accusations of falsifying aspects of his background and resume.
“Our entire community has been victimized, and we demand accountability,” she said at a rally in December in which she demanded Santos resign, according to the New York Daily News.
Kaplan is the third Democrat to file papers for running for the seat, following announcements by Nassau County legislator Josh Lafazan and law professor William Murphy.
Santos officially announced on April 17 that he will seek reelection in 2024 to represent New York”s 3rd Congressional District, despite calls from some Republicans on Capitol Hill and in his district to step aside.
“I”m proud to announce my candidacy to run for re-election and continue to serve the people of NY-3,” Santos said in a statement announcing his candidacy, as quoted by CNN. Last month, Santos filed paperwork formally declaring his 2024 candidacy.
Santos faces long odds after having been discovered to have lied extensively about his resume, education and family background.
A New York prosecutor launched an investigation against Santos in late December after he admitted to “embellishing” his resume.
Last month, the US House Ethics Committee announced that it would investigate Santos over allegations that he lied extensively about his background and violated campaign finance laws.
