Alexander Dubovick, an Israeli citizen who volunteered to fight with the Ukrainian army, was caught and killed by Russian forces as he fought in the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, journalist Itamar Eichner reported.
Dubovick, who was known by his friends as “the partisan,” was killed in a battle on December 23, 2022, but his identity was only made public now.
He was caught by the Russian forces after being injured and was then executed.
Dubovick, 34, was born in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine, and immigrated to Israel. He is survived by his wife and two children, aged 9 and 2. His parents, brothers, and sisters live in Israel.
In February 2022, after the war began, Dubovick returned to Ukraine in order to volunteer in the Ukrainian army.
Family members said that Dubovick was “an impressive person. Ironic, sometimes scathing, but open and straight. He had an astute sense of justice. He was a Jew, he wore a Star of David on his arm, he learned to say ‘Shema Yisrael’ correctly. At the same time, he said that he would fight for Ukraine, and more than that – for freedom and against slavery.”
