Haredi Jews in the UK are continuing to protest over the government”s renewed plans to introduce regulations on unregistered schools, which would greatly impact yeshivas, the Jewish Chronicle reported.
Though previous legislation from last year, the Schools Bill, which would have forced yeshivas to teach a secular curriculum including sex education, was eventually not pursued by the government over its controversial nature, the government has implied it will attempt to regulate unregistered schools through alternate means.
British yeshivas are currently not bound by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) inspections as they do not meet the legal definition of a school.
Activists in the Orthodox community are worried about a review panel by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities that will likely conclude that tough measures need to be taken against yeshivas, according to the report.
Rabbi Asher Gratt, who is a leader of the protests, told the Jewish Chronicle: “This is a fight we are going to take all the way.”
He added that other groups in the protest, including those who represent the parents of home-schooled children, are in contact with him.
“We are going to stand shoulder to shoulder with these people,” he said.
He described the way that yeshivas stress “the importance of discipline, punctuality, and a good work ethic. It also cultivates a sense of responsibility and accountability” but noted that “some people are still attempting to tear down our education system.”
