Adir Wahib Ghanam, 25, the personal security guard of Tayibe’s mayor, was killed Thursday night when shots were fired towards his home.
Ghanam was evacuated in serious condition to Meir Medical Center, where hospital staff were forced to declare his death.
Police are searching for the shooters, and are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Approximately six weeks ago, unknown assailants fired towards the home of Tayibe Mayor Shua’a Mansur that incident ended with no injuries.
In the past few months, Mansur has had a security detail due to threats to his life. Ghanam began serving as his security guard less than a week ago.
On Friday afternoon, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (Otzma Yehudit) will visit Tayibe, an Israeli Arab city, to inspect the scene and to hold discussions with police.
Interior Minister Moshe Arbel (Shas) said, “A threat to public figures in the local leadership is a threat to Israeli democracy. The horrific murder in Tayibe last night, during which the mayor’s personal security guard was killed, is a wake-up call to Israel Police and Shabak (Israel Security Agency) to preserve the abilities of public officials in a democratic country to carry out the tasks placed on them, without fear. I offer my support to the mayor.”
