Opposition leader and chairman of the Yesh Atid Party, Yair Lapid, on Saturday night participated in a protest rally against the judicial reform, which was held in the city of Netanya.
“We are not alone here today. Not far from here there is a demonstration [in favor the judicial reform] led by Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. This is a historical innovation. Show me one example in history where the government demonstrated against its own citizens?!” said Lapid.
“I told our people [who are taking part in negotiations] at the President’s Residence: You don’t represent me, you don’t represent the party, you represent hundreds of thousands of great Israelis who took to the streets to defend their country,” he continued.
“They are there to make sure that we are not being tricked. They are there to check if it is possible to reach a historical agreement that will accompany us a hundred years into the future. They are also there to tell the other side – we are done being suckers.”
Despite the halt in legislation, demonstrations against the government’s judicial reform plan were held at multiple locations in Israel on Saturday night. A few dozen protesters who participated in a demonstration in Tel Aviv managed to block the southbound lanes of the Ayalon Highway.
During the demonstration in Tel Aviv, teenagers who intend to refuse to enlist in the army burned their draft notices.
