A new Rabbi has been elected for the Binyamin town of Hashmonaim: Rabbi Shlomo Glicksberg, who was elected by a majority of votes and will replace Rabbi Itamar Auerbach (67), the rabbi of the town and head of the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva who retired after about 28 years in the position.
The representatives of the town executive committee in Hashmonaim gathered and opened the envelopes in which the ballots of the residents were collected to elect the next rabbi for the settlement of Hashmonaim.
Out of about 1,000 eligible voters, 506 votes were cast.
“For the first question of whether a rabbi should be appointed for the town, the public made its opinion clear: 84% voted in favor of a rabbi for the town,” reads an official announcement on behalf of the town.
The final result was that Rabbi Glicksberg won 58% of the votes his nearest competitor, Rabbi Ot, won 38%.
“We will meet with Rabbi Glicksberg and move forward to close an employment contract with him. With God’s help, we will succeed together.
Rabbi Glicksberg, a graduate of Mercaz Harav, previously served as rabbi and dean of the Mizrachi community in Johannesburg. He also served as an attorney at the Tribunal for Monetary Cases at the Ariel Institutions.
