Two days after the massive “Day of Resistance” demonstration in Tel Aviv and elsewhere, large demonstrations were held Saturday evening for the 10th week in a row protesting the government’s judicial reform package.
The protest groups marched from Tel Aviv’s Habima Square to Kaplan street, where the central demonstration was held. Many roads in the area were blocked.
The former Police Commissioner, Moshe Karadi, addressed the demonstration, stating: “Amending the Police order transfers the Commissioner’s authority to the National Security Minister, who in this case is a convicted criminal. This is a strong sign of a dictatorship.”
Former Judge Hila Gerstel stated from the stage in Tel Aviv: “For 24 years, I served in the judicial system, and along with all its positives, I also know its negatives. I formed the audit commission, I was one of the strongest voices for fixing the judicial system, and I criticized the prosecutor. Those who are behind the reform use my words to justify their own. For that reason, I stand here to say – there is room to fix, there’s no room to destroy.”
The demonstration organizers told the press, “If Levin, Rothman, and Netanyahu won’t announce that they are stopping and getting rid of the legislation, the protests will get stronger in the coming days.”
The leaders of the “struggle against the dictatorship” announced that on Thursday, they will hold another resistance day titled “Day of Strengthening the Resistance.”
On Wednesday, the activists plan on disrupting Netanyahu’s flight to Berlin, while in Berlin, Israeli ex-pats intend on demonstrating against the Prime Minister on his arrival.
The organizers stated: “This is one of the most critical weeks in the fight to protect Israeli democracy from those who are trying to destroy it. All Israelis who the principals of the Declaration of Independence are in their hearts have to go out on Thursday with might and strength to protect the state of Israel. We will not accept any move that will harm Israeli democracy, we are here, on guard, we will protect Israel.”
